The Teaching Block

Teacher Candidates are expected to: 
  • Plan and prepare lessons using the assigned lesson plan templates.
  • Submit lesson plans to the Associate Teacher for review the day prior to implementation
  • Ensure that any materials needed for the lesson are prepared well ahead of time. 
  • Regularly maintain and update the Field Experience Portfolio (FEP). Use the provided criteria and rubrics specific to the FEP Assignment on Canvas (Foundations LMS) as a guide. The Foundations Instructor will assess the FEP assignment which will contribute to the final grade for the Foundations course. 
  • Be responsible for the security of all teaching tools, including laptops, other electronic devices, and any student information. 
  • Complete administrative tasks normally completed by the Associate Teacher (e.g., attendance, distribution or collection of forms) as assigned. 
  • Participate in any regularly scheduled duties with the Associate Teacher (e.g., lunch duty, bus duty, yard duty, hall duty) for the full duration of the duty. 
  • Reflect daily on the expectations of the lesson(s) taught, the actual experience of teaching the lesson(s), and what was learned through this process. 
  • Be considerate and flexible when arranging time with the Associate Teacher and/or Foundations instructor to discuss planning, lessons, and feedback. 
  • Demonstrate openness to new ideas, and be responsive and open to the Associate Teacher's suggestions, alternative strategies, and recommendations. 
  • Seek guidance and assistance from the Associate Teacher and Foundations Instructor as required. 
  • Report any concerns to your Foundations Instructor and/or the Practicum Office in a timely manner. 

Expectations for Duration of Teaching

Practicum 1

The first (Fall) Practicum includes gradually meeting the teaching requirements of 35 - 50% of the instructional day.

Practicum 2

The second (Winter/Spring) Practicum includes gradually meeting the teaching requirements of 50 - 75% of the instructional day.

Practicum 3

The third (Fall) Practicum includes gradually meeting the teaching requirements of 75 - 100% of the instructional day.
