Supporting a Struggling Teacher Candidate
Considerations for Evaluating the Practicum Placement
- The evaluation of the Teacher Candidate should consider their status as a developing teacher and not that of an experienced educator.
- Some Teacher Candidates will require extra assistance, guidance, and encouragement.
- We rely on the Associate Teacher for ongoing assessment, feedback, and communication of the Teacher Candidate's progress.
If, at any time, the Teacher Candidate is not meeting Level 2 of the expectations, the faculty needs to know so that it may provide support. Please contact the Teacher Candidate's Advisor with your concerns as soon as possible.
Failure of a Teacher Candidate
A Teacher Candidate may fail their Practicum if:
- They earn a Level 1 rating in any two areas of competency on the Final Evaluation, or
- They do not meet the expectations of an issued Improvement Action Plan (IAP)
The Associate Teacher will not be put in the position of communicating a failed Practicum placement to a Teacher Candidate.
