Providing Support

Accommodation for Practicum

Should a student require accommodation for practicum due to a disability (permanent or temporary) or medical condition, they must register with Ontario Tech's Student Accessibility Services (SAS) to initiate the accommodation as early in the term as possible. The Practicum Office will then work with the Associate Teacher and school to communicate and discuss implementation.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure any required accommodation(s) are in place prior to the start of practicum.
Students may not unofficially request accommodations of the Associate Teacher at placement.

Incident Reporting for Teaching Candidates

Should an incident occur involving a teacher candidate, they are to report the incident to the university using the Accident Injury Form with which they have been provided. As they are not employees of the board, they do not follow the same policy and procedure/regulation for incident reporting.

Considerations for Evaluating the Practicum Placement

  • The evaluation of the Teacher Candidate should consider their status as a developing teacher and not that of an experienced educator.
  • Some Teacher Candidates will require extra assistance, guidance, and encouragement.
  • We rely on the Associate Teacher for ongoing assessment, feedback, and communication of the Teacher Candidate's progress.
If, at any time, the Teacher Candidate is not meeting Level 2 of the expectations, the faculty needs to know so that it may provide support. Please contact the Teacher Candidate's Advisor with your concerns as soon as possible.

Failure of a Teacher Candidate

A Teacher Candidate may fail their Practicum if:

  • They earn a Level 1 rating in any two areas of competency on the Final Evaluation, or
  • They do not meet the expectations of an issued Improvement Action Plan (IAP)

The Associate Teacher will not be put in the position of communicating a failed Practicum placement to a Teacher Candidate.
