Before accepting an offer to the BEd program, please note the following requirements:

Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSCs)

Students will receive a letter from the Practicum Office with instructions to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check (not a Criminal Records Check) specifically for our BEd program. After receiving this letter, you must apply for a VSC from the police service associated with your current home address

  • Note: Your VSC must be less than 6 months old on the start date of your first practicum. VSCs requested prior to Practicum Office instructions will not be accepted.

As processing time can be up to three months in some jurisdictions, proof of application for a VSC specific to Ontario Tech University's Teacher Education Practicum will be required by June 1, 2026. Students will be provided with instructions on how and where to submit proof of VSC application.

Practicum & In-person Learning Requirements

  • Students are required to attend 27 weeks of in-person learning (9 weeks each in Semester 1, 2, and 4) at Ontario Tech's Charles Hall campus.
    • Classes are scheduled Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Timetables may require students to be on campus five days per week.

  • Students will complete 3 practica throughout the program, totalling no less than the minimum 80 days required by the Ontario College of Teachers. These placements will be completed in one English school board from the choices you will be asked to submit.

In addition to fulfilling the teacher certification requirements set by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), the Practicum experience:

  • allows the Teacher Candidate to experience the daily realities of teaching in school settings;
  • provides Teacher Candidates with opportunities for observation, orientation, and interaction in three different classrooms;
  • allows the Teacher Candidate to appreciate and gain insights regarding school culture and the professional community in which they work;
  • allows Teacher Candidates to participate as members of a school community;
  • provides an opportunity to enhance the theory-practice connections.
