Evaluation of the Practicum

The Practicum is evaluated on the following areas of competency (detailed in full on your Foundations Canvas class rubric):

Commitment

)

Demonstrates dedication to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes the well-being of all students. 

Communication

Exhibits clear, respectful, and effective communication skills with students and colleagues, facilitating understanding and collaboration. 

Knowledge

Demonstrates a strong grasp of subject matter, curriculum, and pedagogical theories, applying this understanding to enhance student learning and engagement. 

Professionalism

Maintains high ethical standards, reflects on teaching practices, engages in ongoing professional development, and collaborates effectively with the educational community. 

Classroom Management

Employs effective strategies to create and maintain an organized, respectful, and productive classroom environment conducive to learning.

Planning

Designs coherent, inclusive, and curriculum-aligned lesson plans that set clear objectives and accommodate diverse student needs.

Implementation

Delivers planned lessons effectively, utilizing appropriate instructional strategies and resources to engage students and facilitate learning.

We rely on the Associate Teacher for ongoing assessment and communication of Teacher Candidates' progress in Practicum. 

If, at any time, the Teacher Candidate is not meeting Level 2 of the expectations, the faculty needs to know so that it may provide support. If a Teacher Candidate is struggling, they should reach out to their Foundations Instructor and/or the Practicum Office immediately. An Improvement Action Plan may be put in place to support. 

If the expectations in the Improvement Action Plan are not met, the faculty will meet with the Teacher Candidate to discuss next steps. 

In the final evaluation, a Level 1 rating in any two areas of competency will result in a failure of the Practicum.
