Student-led conference at Charles Hall: "Piecing Together the Puzzle of Public Art"

On July 26 and 27, Ontario Tech University’s Piecing Together the Puzzle of Public Art conference brought together students, educators, artists, and community members to explore how art in public spaces can inspire dialogue, reflect diverse identities, and strengthen communities.

Organized by students in the EDST 3999U: Special Topics - Teaching and Learning Through Public Art course, the event featured an in-person day at Ontario Tech’s downtown Oshawa campus and an online day open to participants across regions. Sessions included student presentations, community art perspectives, and cultural insights from speakers in fields ranging from art therapy to cultural planning.

The conference opened with a welcome from Traditional Knowledge Keeper Rick Bourque, creating space for connection and respectful dialogue. Throughout the two days, participants examined how public art can be a tool for education, civic engagement, and social change, celebrating their shared passion for making art more accessible and inclusive.

With engaging discussions, prize draws, and opportunities to connect, Piecing Together the Puzzle of Public Art left attendees inspired to see murals, monuments, and installations not just as artworks, but as living pieces of community storytelling.
