Experiential learning

Boys using tablets while teacher candidate watches.Experiential learning provides you with opportunities to apply your learning in a classroom environment, and prepares you to lead and succeed in the 21st-century classroom.

Placements are arranged by our Practicum Specialist within the following university partner school boards:

  • Durham Catholic District School Board
  • Durham District School Board
  • Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board
  • Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board
  • Toronto Catholic District School Board
  • Toronto District School Board
  • York Catholic District School Board
  • York Region District School Board

Note: Placements are restricted to schools within the university's partner school boards listed above—no exceptions.

Field Placements

As a teacher candidate you will take part in three field experience placements, providing you with a minimum of 80 days of first-hand experience both observing and teaching. Under the supervision of an experienced practicing teacher, you will gradually acquire responsibility for teaching classes.

Primary/Junior teacher candidates will complete placements in Kindergarten, Primary (grades 1 to 3) and Junior (grades 4 to 6) classrooms.

Intermediate/Senior teacher candidates will complete placements in Intermediate (grades 7 to 10) and Senior (grades 11 and 12) classrooms.

Field Experience Handbook

The Field Experience Handbook contains guidelines, expectations and policies around experiential learning. All teacher candidates are expected to review the handbook and familiarize themselves with its contents prior to the start of the program.
